Superconducting Magnet Power Supply
IPS3
The IPS3 is Quantum Design Oxford's latest-generation superconducting magnet power supply. Built on the latest electronic circuitry using state-of-the-art components, the IPS3 is designed for performance and reliability, with optimised operation across Quantum Design Oxford's latest Cryofree® magnets systems.
High Performance
The IPS3 is specifically designed for superconducting magnet operation and delivers full bi-directional, bi-polar (four-quadrant) operation. It delivers the full four-quadrant ±120 A, ±5 V output performance that drives all Quantum Design Oxford's standard Cryofree® magnets found in our Proteox® and TeslatronPT Plus systems.
Both front-panel operation and remote communication are offered, and the IPS3 is compatible with Quantum Design Oxford's DECS system control and measurement software. An additional on-board GUI also allows control and visualisation.
The IPS3 has a compact 19" rack-mountable footprint with only 2U height.
Full Magnet Control
- Single-axis magnets
- A single IPS3 unit drives all Quantum Design Oxford's standard Cryofree magnets with four-quadrant ±120 A, ±5 V performance
- For higher current and higher inductance magnets, typically in the 16 to 20 Tesla range such as our unique 20 Tesla Integra system, two units are parallel-connected for performance up to ±240 A, ±10 V
- Multi-axis vector magnets
- Multiple IPS3 units are operated as a group, with each individual unit driving a specific magnet axis
- DECS and on-board vector control software options enable intuitive magnetic field modulus (Bmod) and angle (cylindrical or spherical coordinates) setting
- Quantum Design Oxford's vector magnets are specifically designed to allow vector re-orientation directly from one value to another, without having to return to zero field
- Persistent switch control fully integrated in hardware and software
Safe Operation
Safe magnet operation is ensured by the onboard setting of magnet field limits, and through the IPS3 quench management and run-down load dissipation. Under a quench condition, the IPS3 will safely run the magnet current to zero. The IPS3 will also automatically attempt to 'catch' the magnet current if a persistent switch unexpectedly opens, so that the magnet may be quickly and safely ramped back to the field setpoint. Both a fast-acting solid-state switch and persistent mechanical relay clamp across the output are incorporated for a reliable response to unintended run-down conditions.
